Ken Bruen Brings the Flavor of Jack Taylor to the States in “Merrick”

51o3uYsZHXL__AA160_Ken Bruen’s brooding ex-Garda Jack Taylor apparently has a cousin (or at least a similar character) which is good news for Bruen’s fans! Tommy Ryan had nothing to stay in Ireland for so he’s relocated to New York where he crosses paths with an ex-NYPD officer and finds himself the unwitting target of a physcopath. Drawn unwillingly (and sometime hysterically) into partnership, these two very different men try to find the killer before he sets them up to take the fall for him.
The combination of characters works as smoothly as a good Irish whiskey and readers will be delighted with this most recent member of Ken Bruen’s cast of characters. Even while Tommy Ryan shares some qualities with Jack Taylor, he is in no way a Jack Taylor knock-off. Instead, Ryan immerges as a strong, intriguing character that I’d be happy to see more of. The story starts with a bang and keeps you turning pages all the way through. If you like mysteries, strong lead characters and plot twists and turns then you will love “Merrick” by Ken Bruen. (And, if you’ve never read a Jack Taylor novel, you’ll love those, too!) “Merrick” is scheduled for release on April 15, 2014.
This book was provided to me by the publisher for this review. The openings, however, are entirely my own!
