I don’t know about you but I love “It’s a Wonderful Life.” It’s on my “watch-it-every-year” list along with “The Bishop’s Wife.” So, when I saw that Bob Welch had put together “52 Little Lessons from It’s a Wonderful Life,” I was intrigued. And, a little doubtful…was this just another effort to capitalize on a classic? Luckily for us, no, it is not. This is a thoughtful book of essays that expound on the beloved truths tucked into the classic film. Bob weaves together short pieces that really pull you deeper into the messages, images and unspoken “thoughts”, as it were, of the film. Topics range from “Underdogs Matter” to “When Criticized, Consider the Source” and “Bitterness Backfires on the One Who’s Bitter.” Each of these essays is populated with the characters we know and love from our visits to Bedford Falls. Quotes from the movie are abundant but not over done and Welch draws his parallels without having to overreach himself. All in all, I think this book is a “must-have” for anyone who makes it a tradition to visit Bedford Falls every Christmas and would even make a great stocking stuffer for those who don’t!
