“Maid of Fairbourne Hall” Weaves Fresh Romance from Old Elements

An heiress.  An evil stepfather plotting her marriage for his benefit.  An impromptu escape which lands the heroine hiding within sight and sound of two former suitors.  If this sounds pretty hackneyed, you’ve missed the key element which is author Julie Klassen.  Klassen takes all of these classic elements and weaves a story that seems fresh and new.  Her characters are lively and animated, her heroine spunky without too hard an edge and her hero and his “bad boy alterego” brother are wonderful glimpses into the social scene of the time.

Seeing society through the eyes of a servant is certainly an unusal experience for a pampered young society lady like Margaret Macy.  Her mistakes and misadventures make her unpopular with the staff and her secret causes her to pull further away while questioning her own beliefs about class distinction.  In the meantime, one of the characters struggles with his own unpopular views against slavery.  Most of the story takes place in Maidstone, Kent and, if you are willing to suspend a little belief, enjoy a fresh presentation of classic elements, and find characters you will really enjoy then pack your tea bag and come along to Fairbourne Hall.  I think you’ll be glad you did.
